Greeley Meals on Wheels: Registered Dietitian

Do You Know Someone Who Could Benefit From Home Cooked Balanced Meals? Check out Greeley Meals on Wheels!

Meals on Wheels is an amazing resource for the community! Obviously, I’m a little bias because I’m a Greeley Registered Dietitian Nutritionist. I believe in quality nutrition for my seniors and have the privilege to design menus, develop new recipes and provide education for these wonderful people. As a Northern Colorado Dietitian I feel it is important to promote this amazing program!

Seniors have increased nutrition needs!

Calcium and Vitamin D

Older adults need more calcium and vitamin D to help maintain bone health. Have three servings of calcium-rich foods and beverages each day. This includes fortified cereals and fruit juices, dark green leafy vegetables, canned fish with soft bones, milk and fortified plant beverages. If you take a calcium supplement or multivitamin, choose one that contains vitamin D.

Protein, Vitamin B12 and B6

Many people older than 50 do not get enough vitamin B12 and B6.

Food sources of B6 include: Milk, Fish, Meat, Eggs, Chickpeas, Fortified Grains, etc.
Food sources of B12 include: Liver, Clams, Meat, Fish, Fortified Grains, Nutrition Yeast, Milk, etc.

Soft easy to chew protein sources: ground or shredded meat, add sauces/gravies as needed, tuna, chicken, eggs, tofu, beans.

Fiber

Eat more fiber-rich foods to stay regular. Fiber also can help lower your risk for heart disease and prevent Type 2 diabetes. Fruits, vegetables, whole grain, beans, etc provide fiber.

Potassium

Increasing potassium along with reducing sodium (salt) may lower your risk of high blood pressure. Fruits, vegetables and beans are good sources of potassium. Avocados, sweet potatoes and spinach are great sources!

Heart Healthy and Brain Power Fats

Foods that are low in saturated fats and trans fat help reduce your risk of heart disease and may help prevent dementia. Most of the fats you eat should be polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fats, which are primary found in nuts, nut butter, seeds, avocados, olive oil and fish.

Did you know nine million seniors face the threat of hunger, and millions more live alone in isolation? With the senior population expected to double by 2060, we need volunteers!
